This chapter is about the history phenomenon of mosque before Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). Mosque before Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) time was playing the similar role and position as in Rasullulah era that is for religious and community centre with the various types of activities. The followers of prophets in every age need mosque for collective worship and coordination of other affairs. The followers also need it as a binder for their relationship among themselves.
The first mosque on the earth is Masjid Al-Haram that Adam a.s have constructed and laid the foundation of the sacred place. The second mosque is Masjid Al-Aqsa which is Prophet Suleiman have reconstructed, renewed, and restored it. Prophet Suleiman not the constructor of it, but in points of fact the constructor and laid the foundation of Masjid Al-Aqsa is Prophet Adam. The foundation and certain form of the mosque were laid during Prophet Adam time after forty years he finished the foundation and form of Masjid Al-Haram. Same case with Masjid Al-Haram, the first people laid the sacred land is not Prophet Ibrahim and his son Ismail. However they are reconstructed the sacred place from Prophet Adam. Both mosque have been the centers fro many prophets and its followers. However, through the time, pilgrim of both mosques started to forget their original role and position of mosque. For example, inside the Masjid Al-Haram At those times display 360 idols belonged from many tribes and Masjid Al-Aqsa at those times even become point of prostitution by the Jews people.
The next subtopic of the chapter is about the need for the mosque. Man created by Allah to have the natural disposition (fitrah) to worship its Creator. Thus, Allah sends his messenger to guide man for the proper way to worship. The next point is, man is also created as social being. So the need for the mosque as a meeting or assembling point for Allah’s servant to do collective worship, to match and coordinate of other ibadah activities. Another need for the mosque is as expression of devotion, perseverance and resistance after the prophet and its followers were spreading dakwah in their society. Lastly, a mosque is needed to show the different between monotheistic teaching in Islam and polytheism teaching by infidel in temple. So they can see the truth about the Oneness of God.
Then, it is about the function of the mosque before Rasullulah time. Masjid Al-Aqsa have many history that tell us the function of it such as; as kiblah by Children of Israel for their prayers and Suleiman made this mosque as the core of his rule. Basically the function of mosque before was the same such nowadays; as focal point of our religious and social life, advancing its physical stature as a guide post and its massage as an inspiration and guidance in all our develop, building and planning.
